Tuberculousmeningitisisoftenlethal.Earlyantituberculosistreatmentandadjunctivetreatmentwithglucocorticoidsimprovesurvival,butnearlyonethirdofpatientswiththeconditionstilldie.WehypothesizedthatintensifiedantituberculosistreatmentwouldenhancethekillingofintracerebralMycobacteriumtuberculosisorganismsanddecreasetherateofdeathamongpatients.

METHODS

Weperformedarandomized,double-blind,placebo-controlledtrialinvolvinghumanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV)–infectedadultsandHIV-uninfectedadultswithaclinicaldiagnosisoftuberculousmeningitiswhowereadmittedtooneoftwoVietnamesehospitals.We
